Share This one is for my Star Trek lovers friends. The USS Enterprise Coffee Table by Etsy seller BarryShields . This Star Trek table is made from ash, poplar and cherry wood. It took me a month to build it and 2 tries to cut the 1/4" glass the way I wanted but it turned out nicely. The glass is cut to look as though its in motion and the base was designed to portray the ship in orbit over a planet. It has a beautiful rubbed poly finish coat for complete protection for many years to come. Its solid, sturdy and you CAN put your feet up on it after a long day at the office. This is a one of a kind!

Share A couple weeks ago I posted about the HBO 1920s Boardwalk Empire Subway Train
that was running on the 2/3 track for all the weekends in September. Yesterday I was lucky to catch a last ride in it. The train was fantastic, you really felt like you were in another time. The recreated vintage advertising with characters names like Nucky Thompson fit perfectly in every cabin. Boardwalk Empire premiered yesterday Sept. 25th on HBO and just like the show the train was amazing! Definitely a great way to advertise a show and overall great fan experience!

About the artist: Glenn Barr is one of Detroit's most celebrated and successful underground artists. His paintings have appeared in galleries from Seattle and San Francisco to New York City. Glenn's work has been featured in a variety of comics and graphic novels such as Mad, DC Comics and Paradox Press as well as in a series of self published books called HEEP. Barr's contribution to animation include background styling for The Ren and Stimpy Show, Bjork's "I Miss You" video, and The New Woody Woodpecker Show.

"If you live in New York, and have taken a stroll on the Lower East Side, you may have seen various artist types crawling into a basement somewhere on Ludlow Street, navigating our treacherous basement steps with awesome paintings and photography. Yes, we are a home for talented artists, who have been producing and exhibiting art from said underground space with our shared equipment for almost 2 years now. It’s not the damp, the bugs, or the drunken Lower East Side revelers falling into our studio every night that has inspired us to move (actually we have grown to embrace these things). We are actually growing and need more space to accommodate a greater number of talented artists, as well as hosting even more visiting artists, local and abroad.

So we have found a much larger location that is calling our name, which will give us a store front, gallery, and 2 floors of shared artist workspace. We already have the amazing artists and equipment for them to use, but we really need some help to build the space out and make it workable for them.
Your generous donations will help us to create walls where there are none, install concrete floors, sinks, lights and storage. With your help we will also buy a projector and screen to integrate with a sound system, in order to expand our services for film artists.

Share Today in historical things that are kind of cool: You'll see a 1920s (authentic, vintage) subway train running on the 2/3 track for all the weekends in September. The train was originally used for the IRT system, and began service in 1917. Now its rattan seats and Prohibition-era detailing (ceiling fans! drop sash windows!) will be paired with "Boardwalk Empire-inspired period artwork" because, after all, this is not just an old train, it is a promotional old train. Specifically, HBO is using it to remind people of season two of their Prohibition-era-detailed show, Boardwalk Empire, which premieres on Sunday, September 25.

The MTA occasionally brings back adorable vintage subway trains for holiday time and such. And despite this being a promotional gambit, and therefore slightly less "innocent" in purpose, we do like legit old subway trains, and apparently "brand ambassadors" will be giving complimentary MetroCards away on the weekend of the show's premiere. Free stuff. That makes up for "brand ambassadors." Also, a vintage subway train is better than a whole train covered in wall-to-wall Target advertising...right?

For the record, Laura Young, director of corporate affairs at HBO, told us they've never used an authentic, time-period accurate train for other show promotions, though they did wrap and brand a train in which the interior was transformed to the period, for Deadwood.

Catch the train Saturdays and Sundays in September from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. -- it will make stops at 96th, 72nd6th, and 42nd street. Catch the show wherever you watch HBO, if you do that sort of thing. Via The Village Voice.
